Is Tuition a good business?

After several years of not being in touch, I recently met an old friend of mine. We sat next to each other in class when Year 11 was called 5th year & GCSEs were simple O Levels.

“Are you still a teacher, Clarky?” He asked, inquisitively. I had in fact been out of the classroom, at that time, for over 10 years.

“No mate. I own a Tuition Centre. I left the classroom some time ago.”

He looked totally shocked.

He knew I had had a good career and that I’d worked in several schools. I was on good money having been promoted several times and had been head-hunted for Deputy Headship.

“Can’t be earning much money doing that!” He scoffed. He almost looked sorry for me.

I didn’t tell him the details.

But at the time 130 students were on roll at the Tuition Centre, attending for a minimum of 40 weeks a year, paying on average £26 a week.

I was paying out for rent & I had bought lots of equipment, BUT the numbers were improving & my phone didn’t stop ringing.

That was then….

Before the recent lockdown the average number of students attending the Tuition Centre was approaching 200.

On the other hand I have heard of Tuition Centres having to close due to not having enough students, including well known franchised brands.

Maybe that’s where my friend got his idea from.

You see in any business,:

20% of people are broke.

60% of people are in an endless financial struggle

15% of people make a good living

4% of people are prosperous

1% of people are rich

My friend thought I was in the 80%.
